China develops next-generation internet

Chinanews, Jan.30 - China's role in the first generation internet era
could be described as being a "market" for the technology. In the
development of the next-generation internet, China would not only master
the core technology but also play an active role in the developmental
process.
On the last Saturday in 2004, CERTNET2, the core network of China's
next-generation internet, which uses Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)
technology and is the biggest network in the world, went into formal
operation in Beijing. The news was included in the "Top 10 News on
Science and Technology in 2004" published a few days later. The launch of
CERNET2 indicated that China would surge ahead in the development of the
next-generation internet in 2005.
Compared with the first generation internet, the technology for the
next-generation internet is completely new. Therefore various relevant
standards would be rewritten.
The United States was the leading country in the development of the first
generation internet. In terms of fibers, computers, operating systems and
routers, the United States not only mastered the core technologies but
also dominated in crucial areas such as agreements, standards and
products, from which the country made huge profits in the new economy
that was brought about by the internet.
With the next-generation internet, China would play a bigger and more
active role in core technology and the entire industrial chain. The core
network of China's next generation internet that has just been put into
operation uses a lot of core network technology and products whose
independent intellectual property rights are owned by China. Serving as
crucial infrastructural equipment to study, explore and promote internet
industry development, CERNET2 would fully accelerate the development of
CPUs, computers, servers, system softwares, middlewares, routers and
application service systems.
Currently, China has achieved a breakthrough in the research, development
and production of IPv6 Routers, the core equipment for the
next-generation internet. For the popularization of the next-generation
internet in the world, China would provide more products and services of
good quality and competitive prices ranging from network technology, key
equipment to computer terminals.
