Free Chinese Lesson - Better teen body image with privacy

Opinion / Raymond Zhou

Better teen body image with privacy
By Raymond Zhou (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-04-15 07:33

High school graduates in China live in constant anxiety. They have to sit
through the fate-determining entrance exam, the result of which could
more or less shape their future earning power and social status. But
before that happens, they have to go through physical check-ups that
require, for a brief moment, total nakedness.

Many students tremble at the prospect. A few have reportedly used extreme
means to dodge it.

The process described by some as "going through hell" takes place in a
health facility. Typically, a dozen teenagers of the same gender will be
grouped together, asked to disrobe and perform certain routines such as
extending arms and legs and bending.

The awkwardness is palpable, but most oblige after a few seconds of
hesitation. Many choose to forget about the experience, and a few have
written about it as "humiliating" or "shameful."

Obviously, the authorities were listening. There has been a spate of
recent reports of hospitals changing policies on this part of the health
exam. Some have extolled the termination of the "stripping" practise as a
sign of regained respect for personal privacy.

Health facilities are indeed moving in the right direction. Teenagers are
at an awkward age and tend to be thin-skinned about their bodies.
Examination involving nudity should be handled with sensitivity and
professionalism.

It doesn't really add to the burden of administering thousands of testees
on a single site. Cubicles with curtains can be erected without much
cost, and those "touchy" tests could be done inside, away from the prying
(more likely, equally uneasy) eyes of the milling crowd.

Those who perform the test could explain what purpose it serves and why
stripping is necessary. They could also prepare the students by telling
them what exactly the procedure will involve before performing it. All
this may help ease the nervousness of the youngsters.

But should nudity be called off simply because many are distressed by it?
That doesn't preclude its necessity, which is up to medical
professionals, not media commentators, to decide.

If it's gratuitous, sure, why keep it and ratchet up people's anguish?

But what if it does indeed serve a health-related purpose?

I remember when I was in college, a schoolmate aroused suspicions because
he never used the urinal while others were around and never went to the
public bathroom, the only type available then. His roommates were curious
about his real gender and wondered aloud whether he had the check-up.

Of course, whether he was just hypersensitive or had a physical issue had
little to do with others, and it didn't affect his academic performance
either. But it seems to me that his doctor has a right to know and would
be in a position to help him if there was a need.

China does not have a tradition of respecting individual privacy, so it
is a welcome change that hospital authorities are showing awareness of
the issue when handling routine check-up for high school students.

On the other hand, China has a long tradition of body shame, which these
reports have inadvertently reinforced.

There is no contradiction between respect for personal privacy and pride
of one's own body. When Du Fu wrote about his wife's "jade-like arms,"
some old scholars felt he stepped over the line. Shouldn't women in that
era have covered all body parts except their faces?

Fortunately, we no longer live in a time when women were praised for
cutting off their own arms when touched by male strangers. But that
doesn't mean we have a healthy attitude toward body image.

Self-loathing is rampant, especially among insecure teenagers. When one
would think of jumping off a high building rather than go through the
check-up process, it may be just as much a personal problem as improper
hospital procedures.

Physical check-up is a strange place to bring up the topic of body
perception. In western cultures, body image is often about young women
trying to look like Barbie. Over here, there is the historical baggage
that your body is something to be shameful of, especially the private
parts. It is time we told our youngsters that, yes, they are private and
people should not violate your privacy, but no, they are by no means
loathsome.

SASAC: Central SOEs cut to 155

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-07-21 21:20

BEIJING, -- The number of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs)
affiliated to the central government, or the country's central SOEs, has
dropped from 157 to 155 in a state-pushed drive to restructure and
streamline the group.

China Travel Service (CTS) (Holdings) Corp. was merged into CTS
(Holdings) Hong Kong Ltd., while China Textile Industrial Engineering
Institute became a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation,
according to Friday's announcement by the State-owned Assets Supervision
and Administration Commission (SASAC).

The SASAC has planned to cut the number of major enterprises under its
control from 157 to between 80 and 100 by 2010, but a SASAC research
fellow Wang Zhigang said earlier the goal would be met by the end of next
year.

The Chinese central government will also focus on developing 30 to 50
enterprises to better compete with foreign firms.

SASAC Director Li Rongrong said in an earlier report that the state
assets agency will concentrate strategic industries like military,
electric power grid, petroleum and chemical, telecommunications, coal,
civil aviation and shipping industries.

The watchdog will also emphasize key companies in auto, construction,
electronic information, steel and machinery manufacturing industries, Li
said.

The assets regulator, set up in 2003 to take control of big state
companies, has cut the number of major SOEs by promoting mergers and
acquisitions and allowing poorly performing state firms to go bankrupt.

If i have chance to visit China again in future, i would definately come
to Guilin for a second time. Yangshuo is a very peaceful and calm area
for you to stay after visiting some big cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
You can rent a bicycle and cycle around the rural area to enjoy the
breathtaking sceneries and local country people's life. It was a pity
that i just stayed one day in Yangshuo.

Chinese shares hit record high

(Source: Xinhua)

July 27 - After more than a month of uncertainty, Chinese share prices
rose to a new record high on Thursday following the release of half-year
financial reports by listed companies, which showed healthy profits.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.52 percent or 22.49 points
to close at 4,346.46 - breaking the previous record of 4,335.96 points
set on May 29 - and the Shenzhen Component Index ended on 14,619.74
points, up 1.5 percent.
According to Thursday's China Securities Journal, 89 listed companies
that had released their half-year reports by Wednesday witnessed an
average increase in net profits from last year of 206 percent.
Although the high figure will not reflect the whole picture of the
profits recorded by a total of 1,400-plus listed firms, analysts are
upbeat about the combined profit earnings for the whole market this year.
Shares of companies in the property, securities and textile industries
performed well. Vanke, China's largest property firm, rose 0.59 percent
to 27.41 yuan and CITIC securities leapt 5.12 percent to 66.9 yuan.
Jiangsu Wuzhong, a textile company, rose the 10-percent daily limit to
6.33 yuan and China Garments went up 9.98 percent to 7.16 yuan.
Major banks fell on Thursday, with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of
China down 1.2 percent to 5.77 yuan and the Bank of China down 0.55
percent to 5.46 yuan.
The combined turnover of the two bourses recovered from 196.3 billion
yuan on Wednesday to 209.9 billion yuan on Thursday. (One U.S. dollar is
equal to 7.56 yuan)

Chinese shares rise 2.69% on Monday
Chinese shares plunge more than 5%
Chinese shares close higher Monday

Mysterious lake monsters boost tourism boom

www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-11 15:33:20

Chinanews, Urumqi, July 11 C Some mysterious lake monsters appeared in
Kanas Lake again a week ago, which further boosted the tourism boom in
Xinjiang. During the first half of this year, the number of visitors to
Xinjiang increased by 20% compared with the same period last year.
Kanas Lake is located in Burgin County in Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang. The
name, Kanas, means the lake in the valley. Extending 20 kilometers
long and 2 kilometers wide across mountainous areas, Kanas Lake is said
to be the deepest mountain lake in China Cin some parts, the lake can be
as deep as 188 meters. Every year, tourists from home and abroad come to
the place, attracted by its snow-capped mountains, grasslands, primeval
white birch forests, and the mysterious lake monsters that appear and
disappear in the lake.
On July 5, some tourists spotted some strange animals emerging from the
lake. They used their handy video cameras to record the whole process.
The recording time lasted for about 8 minutes. The tape shows that about
15 strange animals are cruising the lake, now gathering around and now
standing side by side to form a line. In the distance, they look like a
fleet of boats sailing on the lake.
This is just one of the many times that the story of lake monsters in
Kanas was reported by media. On June 7-8, 2005, a lake monster was said
to appear in Kanas Lake twice. An eye-witness used his digital camera to
take a photograph of the animal. According to the eye-witness, the upper
part of the animal that showed above the water measured about 2 meters
long.
In June 2006, three tourists from Beijing happened to record the
emergence of the lake monster again with their digital video cameras.
Their pictures once again brought up the old topic about lake monsters in
Kanas. Some adventurers even wanted to dive in to have a thorough
investigation about the lake.

Last Harry Potter shipped to Beijing

www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-05 15:40:23

Chinanews, Beijing, July 5 C The 7th and the last book of the
world-famous Harry Potter Series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,
will be released on July 21. A large cargo of the American edition of the
book was shipped to Beijing on July 3.
The reservation of the book is very hot, even hotter than the previous
one. It might break the sales record made by the previous Harry Potter
book, Harry Potter and the Half-blooded Prince.
Harry Potter and the Half-blooded Prince arrived 9 days earlier than the
release day, while this time the book arrived 18 days earlier.
Joyo Amazon, one of the biggest online bookstores in China, said that it
has laid in stock more than 10,000 copies of the book. However, these
books are still left at the Customs, waiting to be checked.
The localization of the book wont start before the original version is
released. Ma Ainong and Ma Aixin, the co-translators of several previous
episodes, will still be in charge of the translation of the last one. It
is estimated that the Chinese version of the Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows will be available in late October.

Ten future transformations in Chinese marriages

www.chinanews.cn 2004-12-14 09:50:54

Chinanews, Dec 11 - Chen Xinxin, a specialist on marriage and family
issues and associate at the Research Institute of Chinese Women's
Federation, predicted Chinese marriages would grow more pluralistic in
the future. This would include a new focus on the quality of marriage,
respect for personal rights, and individuality in marital life.
Statistics from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed that the divorce
rate in China grew threefold in twenty-three years, from 0.07% in 1980 to
0.21% in 2003. The increase was even more pronounced in big cities like
Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou. Professor Wang Zhenyu, a
researcher on family and marriage issues at the Chinese Academy of Social
Sciences, conducted a survey along with her colleagues on the causes of
divorce, with the conclusion that extramarital affairs were responsible
for 70-80% of divorces in China.
Believing that marriage would become more diversified in China, Chen
Xinxin pointed out the ten changes that would transform Chinese marriages
in the future.
1. A smaller family structure, typically with three to four members.
Expectations on marriage will change with a higher standard of living.
Emphasis in a marriage will shift from bringing more income to the
household, housework distribution and childbearing to maintaining an
intimate relationship, adherence to the marital accord, mutual
understanding, and building a comfortable home.
2. An increasing population of late marriages and postponed childbirth.
Meanwhile, more people will choose to stay single and not have children.
3. More standard, scientific sex education. Casual sex encounters due to
curiosity among youth people will decrease, while young people will adopt
a more prudent attitude towards premarital sex.
4. Personality and compatible interests start to weigh more than economic
background when choosing a spouse. It is also important for people to
choose a spouse that belongs to the same social class. For a young woman,
humor, respect, and sense of fun in a man will gradually replace money
and family background as the most important qualities.
5. Marital quality will become a new pursuit. Most couples will place
more emphasis on compatibility and take initiatives to make adjustments
to their marriage, in order to build a happy family and enrich the family
environment. With more equality and less violence in the family, a couple
will share family responsibilities.
6. Couples go Dutch. Now couples are making the transition from one
person controlling the family finance to splitting costs between the two.
Couples will notarize their properties before marriage, hold individual
bank accounts, and manage their finances separately. Couples will fulfill
their economic obligations in the family according to their pre-nuptial
agreement.
7. Less conflict due to housework. As the labor intensity of housework
decreases and common household appliances shorten the amount of cleaning
time, couples will argue less about who should do the housework.
8. More rational divorces. Divorce by mutual consent and trial divorce
will become the principal choice for rational separation, with the
divorce rate still in an uptrend. People that are knowledgeable,
educated, and emotionally sensible also have higher expectations of love.
The social pressure on divorcees will reduce.
9. A rational attitude toward extramarital affairs. While society
maintains a rational attitude toward extramarital affairs, a sense of
responsibility in marriage should come from self-knowledge,
self-discipline and self-reproach, not external pressure. People will
stress marriage quality and emotional wellbeing and demand personal
rights and privileges, with more freedom of choice and self awareness.
10. Increasing freedom in choosing marriages. Marriage will no longer be
a simple act of following the public, but an individual cogitative
choice. The lifestyles of single people and dinks are among the
diversified choices available for married couples as well as single
people.
