3G mobile phone chips can be made in China

Chinanews, Dec.9 - Yesterday, 3 companies including VeriSilicon Holding,
Commit Incorporated and SMIC jointly introduced domestic 3G mobile phone
chips-----3GTD-SCDMA. The chips have been put into fixed quantity
production. These 3G mobile phone chips were independently designed,
processed and produced by China for the first time.
Using the SMIC's international 0.18 micron process flow, wafer
photoetching was successfully completed in one round. Commit Incorporated
undertook to design and test the chips' fore-end system and circuit while
VeriSilicon Holding's micro-electronics provided service to SMIC with
0.18 micron cell library and backend design. This project was launched in
April this year and samples reached the market by August.
According to Tao Xiongqiang, chairperson of TD-SCDMA Industry Union and
president of Commit Incorporated, complete domestic solution to TD-SCDMA
mobile phone chip group with China-owned IPR changed the current
situation that the core chips of China's mobile phone industry entirely
relied on imports and shortened the development period of mobile phone
manufacturers.
