I'll third the suggestion for massive amounts of listening.

It's important to have a basic vocabulary of a couple of thousand words. How you get those
(textbook study, flashcards...) is irrelevant,...

I know things are changing everyday- but im wondering what you guys think.
I have a 90day visa that expires Aug 18th, and I want to extend it at the public security bureau

Depends on what sort of visa it is. If it is an F-visa then there is no way to extend it beyond
Jul 1. If it is an L-visa (tourist visa) then you should be able to extend it. I just extended
mine last week.

It is supposed to be jargons used bu gangsters or some thing like that. I can't explain it
exactly. Roughly, it means that identity was discovered and thus exposed.

When you use the Annotator 说 will be translated to "shui4". Which is maybe not outright wrong,
however, in most cases it should be "shuo1".

It's not a ZDT problem, rather a CEDICT DB problem. But for those which use the Annotator function
often certainly a nuisance.

Solution: the technical knowledgeable can open die CEDICT file and just swap the two entries.

There are tens if not hundreds of characters that have multiple pronunciation; how should ZDT
handle them? Putting the most common one first is probably a good idea, and for many characters
that will probably be good enough. But what about 相, 調, 重, 長, 者, and 得 in which the
multiple pronunciations are common?

You are of course right. For 话 it's very obvious that the shuo1 should come first, for others
you have to check case by case. That's maybe the problem with all automatic translations.

But, what would be cool would a function to make it easier to edit the CEDICT DB. Now I open the
cedict.script file with notepad and do a manual editing.

Anyone has a better solution?

I'm not sure that I have a better solution but in looking for one, this is what I found:

First, take a look at the following page: MandarinTools

Note that it contains a link for new entries: automated submission page

... and a link to join a mailing list "to discuss issues related to CEDICT, including specific
dictionary entries ... as well as possible future directions for the CEDICT project."

I believe that ChineseTools of MandarinTools is also a member of this forum.

Additions and corrections via MDBG can be made here.
Here is the MDBG link for improvements.

Finally, you can download the updated version of CEDICT from either MandarinTools or MDBG, and
then, I think, there should be a way to import the updated version into ZDT.

Of course, Chris of ZDT is the best one to discuss all this with.

I don't really recommend editing the dictionaries by hand because in the future if I update the
dictionary you'll lose all your changes if you're not careful.

I think participating in editing CEDICT is the way to go, and will benefit the whole Chinese
learning community in general. I can update the cedict plugin when people request it.

Bogleg (Chris), which version of CEDICT is used in ZDT now? Can I install the latest version? I
figure I should ensure I'm using the latest version before I comment on it.

Hi Jeff,

I've just updated the CEDICT plugin to the Nov 26th version of the CEDICT dictionary. The old
version was more than a year old I think. It has 55,000 entries which is double the amount of
entries as the old version. Just download the new jar file and drop it into your plugins directory
and you should be good to go.

Sorry, but 说 could be pronounced as "shui4" as in 说服. I agree it should not be the first
choice, but it was not wrong either.

丼 is a very old Chinese character and it does mean "well". Again, it is not wrong, either.

Luobot, thanks for the pointers on updating CEDICT entries. As you suggest, I followed the MDBG
link. Turns out they make it incredibly easy! Just lookup any word or phrase
(http://www.xuezhongwen.net/chindict/chindict.php), and in the results, on the far right in the
answer box, is a little pencil-and-paper icon. Just click on it to bring up a form to suggest a
correction. Really simple!

A new word for me was 文旦 which I'm assuming is the same as 柚子.
I was thinking that even if people already knew the vocabulary in the videos, they could also

yeah, tongue twister. rap has words that rhyme. but they dont usually twist your tongue. its not
that easy to mess up, just difficult to get the flow. and rap usually has meaning. those tongue
twisters dont necessarily have to say anything. both videos are talking about easily messing up
what you say. in some cases saying different words.

no, no, I am embarassed, not the Italians. I was trying to say that many young Italians are
learning Chinese, but not many Chinese (young or old) are learning Italian. How do I know? From
reading this thread.

Their is not much enthusiasm for Chinese language. Those who really learn it is still a very very
small minority. The market for English, Spanish and even Japanese is way bigger.

Nevertheless, there are surely be some Chinese that learn Italian, but one has to look at the
right places. Here is certainly not the right place. The right place would a message board of a
Chinese university that teaches foreign languages. Our Italian friend would need help with that
though, as they are 100% in Chinese.

Another option is the QQ rooms. Get a QQ #, and search and join a group. Search here:

To make money out of that will be another problem, you need to find willing people near you.

This is not an "Italian language in China board". If you go to a cats board you need ask questions
about cats, not many will help you with your car mechanics questions. Just my common sense
approach.....

PS: I was looking for an IT<>CN<>EN interpreter a while ago and they do exist. Harder to find, but
still possible.

Here is another possible suggestion: contact a, or several, (English) language school(s) near you.
They will offer Italian as long as they can make some money out of it. I think that would be the
most easiest and highest potential possibility.

You hit the learned market for that, those would be the guys who buy gucci and prada and dolce and
maybe you'll find some interst. Other than that you could try some of the fashion schools or
traders who work in that part of the world. If I were you since you seem to be able to speak
English I would package together English and Italian with English being the primary focus. Or shop
out your resume to a few restaurants and tout your ability to deliver authentic italian class that
may work but its a longshot.
Your problem is that a market for non English western language is still young s you'll have to
just wait a little while until it matures.

I am Italian as well. I am going to be spending my next year in Hangzhou. Would be interesting to
post messages at a Fashion School or at a Music School. I know many Japanese opera students
wanting to learn Italian. Not sure if Hangzhou has anything like that sort of activities.

I had a summer job teaching recent engineering student hires Business English in the summer for
the Iveco (Fiat) Company. In addition to english training they did have classes in Italian though
these were taught by a chinese teacher.

I am based in Nanjing where Iveco has a large mini bus factory. (the big white ones that look like
Airport shuttles) .

You could try applying to these large companies to try and get a job. Also there are some wine
importers with import from Italy, Germany and to an extent France.

The new shopping fad is on fashion. Some people will spend a month or 2 month's salary on a
handbag. It is huge growth industry.

Also there are some Italian and EU chamber of commerce groups that you can try and contact to get
leads.

Someone I know went to this school in Beijing: http://www.holaeurope.cn/ A google search for
北京意大利语培训 (Courses of Italian in Beijing) shows quite a number of options. I don't
know any, so I can't comment.

The numbers however are misleading. Even if 0.01% of people living in cities are interested in
Italian, you may still find a niche here. The drivers are what you would expect: a passion for
art, history or fashion etc. The problem is finding prospects. You would also need a school to
arrange visas for you. On the other hand I still regularly meet young Chinese who think Italians
speak English like Leonardo Di Caprio, so English may be hard to get away from.

I've found with Taiwanese that when I hear it, I have no idea what the actual words the person is
saying are. However, if I just sort of sit back and let my ears do the thinking, I start to
understand the general gist of what the speaker is saying...while continuing to not understand the
individual words. Odd.

This happened in Jingtong a few months ago; we went hiking up Shulongjian and the two dogs that
the owners of our hotel had followed us up, then disappeared. On the way back we asked an old lady
if she'd seen the two dogs. She talked for about 45 seconds in Taiwanese.

"What did she say?" asks my boyfriend.
"That the dogs came by about an hour ago and headed home."
"So you understood what she said?!"
"Not really."

A lot of Taiwanese is very similar to Mandarin ("wah bu ei hiang dai yi" should be a phrase any
decent speaker of Mandarin would understand)...and a lot of it is really, really not.

There are some downloadable forum versions where you can switch the language in the preferences.
Not suggesting it here, after so much work has been put into From Beijing Chinese School, then they are made a normal member and
their posts will appear directly.

Regarding post moderation, single-line posts from new members that add nothing to the thread are
usually just deleted, for example, just saying "I agree", or repeating something that is exactly
the same as a previous reply (e.g. the definition of a word or term). Single line language
exchange requests are also deleted. All the above points apply regardless of the language used.

Another common mistake that some new members make is to use the "report post" button instead of
the "post reply" button. This often happens by people who have signed up, but not clicked the
registration link in the email and so the post reply button isn't yet visible. Clicking on the
"report post" button will just send a message to the admin and we have no practical way to make
this appear as a post in the original thread under the member's name.

So, in summary, new users should
1) Make sure they fully complete the registration process (including clicking on the link in the
email).
2) Make posts/new threads with content that contributes to the discussion, rather than just adding
one-liners repeating what has already been said.
3) Have patience until their post appears (which might be up to 24 hours).

If for some reason a post still hasn't appeared after that time, then it has probably not made it
past the moderation stage. If this has happened the member can always send a message to the admin
asking why.

Yes, that's why I asked if it is possible to have a translation service.(maybe needless to
translate all of the articles but keypoints for Chinese learners to better understand the ideas. I
know it requires a lot of work. 中文角 seems to be a place to practice Chinese.

The items next to the LCD from top to bottom are:

I think the buttons under the temperature control (in left-right left-right order) are

I use Cool Edit, I have that since ages. However, it's not freeware. For FREE I suggest Audacity.

Another vote for audacity - very useful tool and very easy to use. Maybe takes a little time to
figure out what you can do with it, but worth the effort. If you do a search on audacity you'll
find previous comments about it.

There's also a portable version of Audacity. No install required, so you can carry it around on a
USB key.

Was going to write more about audacity yesterday but didn't have time.

Audacity is useful as it lets you lay out multiple soundtracks on one page, lets you listen to
one, some or all of them at one time, lets you copy and paste bits of sound around the same way
you do with text in Word, and you can save it all as a project file so it's all there when you
come back to it later.

As an example, you could have a recording from your textbook in mp3 format. You open it with
audacity and listen to it a few times. Then you record yourself reading the same line. Then you
mute the textbook version and listen to yourself, try to spot what's wrong then rerecord minus
(hopefully) the mistakes. Then you compare your second version with the model and realize you are
still getting one sound wrong. So you highlight just that bit of audio and listen to it 10 times,
comparing it with your version. You're still not quite sure what's going on, so you slow it down
by 50% and that helps a bit. So you record your third version, and while it isn't perfect you feel
fairly happy with it. Then you're tired so you save it and go to bed. The next morning you open it
up again and review your first, second and third attempts with fresh ears, taking note of the
changes you made for future reference.

I am not sure about Audacity, but CoolEdit has a "de-noise" function. It works really great on old
tapes to get rid of the often strong background hiss noise.

I think Audacity can do that too. It would be great for the FSI fans out there.....

It's important to have a basic vocabulary of a couple of thousand words. How you get those

Thank you for your comments. Next time I will post ordinary speech, not reading. And a shorter
passage.Yes, pronunciation always holds my Chinese back because if I speed up people can't
understand and so there's a limit. Also a problem is that my Chinese friends are used to me and
can understand - but that does not mean anything really. As soon as I talk to a new person, I feel
the difference.

I tried to listen to your recording carefully and write down what you read.
Is it? I am not sure if I got them accurately, espcially words in the brackets, but as a whole, I
think you did well.

Some problems do exist (excuse me).
a) I noticed that your pronounced most zh, ch, sh as z, c, s obviously. I am also curious if you
were imitating local (southern) accent?
b) Some tones weren't accurate, I mean fo exmaple 1st pronounced as 2nd like "加jia1以反对/
加jia2以反对". However, you've aware of your tone such as '1st one is not high enough'. That's
right. So it made you speak in some Northeast accent. BTW, have you been to Northeast China?
c) Some breaks heard unnaturally. I suppose that you were not familiar with some words so that you
hesitated. But I don't think it is big problem. Just learn those words by heart.

Then I did a record work, but not sure for some words. Therefore I posted what I heard. I know you
will post the passage next time, but you see... I don't assure some words. Anyway, anyone wants to

I think everyone has already made some great comments on your recording, so I got nothing too much
to add. Perhaps some of your tone problems and hesitations are rooted in your nervousness? I don't
know, you just sounded a bit nervous to me, nervousness is a definitive factor when speaking a
language, I feel. When I speak with people and become nervous, I now tend to pause more often in
between words (English too), because I am thinking about how to calm myself down,,,,,sometimes
will sound like a 智障者, heh heh, well not far from it i guess,,

a very strong foreign accent.

Some words are wrongly pronounced, such as 冒(mao4) 请(qing3)客送礼送(song4)一两条烟

July 15 - China's emergency authorities evacuated 326,000 people from
low-lying areas, ordered hundreds of ships to take shelter and canceled
dozens of flights as Tropical Storm Bilis crashed into the mainland's
eastern coast on Friday.
Bilis, which weakened from a typhoon to a tropical storm early yesterday
after lashing Taiwan, hit Fujian Province in the early afternoon.
The storm landed in Xiapu County, 220 kilometers northeast of the
provincial capital Fuzhou.
Top wind speed near the storm's center was 108 kilometers an hour.
The storm was forecast to gradually loose strength as it headed inland at
15 kilometers an hour.
In Fujian, 256,000 people were evacuated to safety, 42,000 ships were
called in from the sea and schools canceled classes.
In Zhejiang Province, where Bilis brought winds measuring up to 100
kilometers an hour, 70,000 residents were evacuated and 180,000 ships
ordered to shore.
Heavy showers began in Zhejiang around noon Thursday noon, dumping 184
millimeters of rainfall on Wenzhou.
In the northern Philippines, the death toll from Bilis rose to 14 with
seven missing. Fifteen people were injured last night. The storm hit the
country on Wednesday, causing landslides and flash floods.
"Most of the casualties were drowning victims and those buried alive by
landslides," said Gleen Rabonza, executive director of the National
Disaster Coordinating Council, adding that more than 50,000 people were
affected by the storm.
One man was electrocuted in Taipei on Thursday and two mainland Chinese
fishermen disappeared after a fishing boat ran aground off Taiwan's Matsu
Island, officials said.
Bilis caused a series of landslides that disrupted traffic in central and
eastern Taiwan but did not inflict major injuries, they said.
"Bilis' wide outer bands will continue to affect Taiwan, and residents
have to prepare for torrential rain in the next two days," forecaster Wu
Teh-rong said.
On the Chinese mainland more than a dozen flights were canceled beginning
Thursday evening at the Changle International Airport in Fuzhou, the
provincial capital.
In Shanghai, ferry services on the Huangpu River were not affected
yesterday, but passenger ships to neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangsu
provinces were halted. More than 210 flights at the city's two airports
were delayed or canceled.
Strong wind and rain were forecast for Shanghai today, with a high of 32
degrees Celsius and low of 27 degrees.

Chinanews, Beijing, July 3 �C A Peking University professor recently
pointed out that after the banks raised their loan application threshold
to 35%, Chinese real estate market would encounter 310 billion yuan of
fund insufficiency. It is expected that 20-30% of property developers
will be squeezed out of the real estate market, and foreign capital,
various kinds of social funds and funds from other sectors will flow in.
In a forum held last Saturday, Professor Xu Dianqing from Peking
University��s Chinese Economic Research Center said that the 35% capital
adequacy ratio required by banks might be OK to large property developers
who had a relatively high capital adequacy ratio and small debt. For
small- and medium-sized property developers, however, the threshold might
be difficult to pass through. Some analysts predicted that 20-30% of
property developers might be eliminated in a certain time.
At present, the State Development and Reform Commission is revising the
Catalogue for the Guidance of Foreign Investment Industries. In the
book��s previous revised edition made of 2004, ordinary housing projects
were still categorized as the ��encouraging type�� for foreign investors.
Some analysts in the industry predict that in the new revision work, some
adjustments will be made in this aspect.

Chinanews, Beijing, June 21 - Chai Haitao, director of the Chinese
Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the
Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), said in Beijing last week that China will
set up 50 overseas economic and trade cooperation zones to deal with
ever-expanding trade frictions and implement the policy of foreign trade
transformation.
Early this year, officials from MOFCOM revealed that China will strive to
establish approximately ten foreign economic and trade cooperation zones
this year, each zone capable of obtaining up to 2 billion RMB (US$250
million) of loans.
Manchuria Haifeng Electric Appliance Co., Ltd has signed an agreement to
set up an economic cooperation zone in Russia's Zabaikalsk. The project
has begun in April. In addition, another cooperation zone in Mongolia has
also started construction.
The economic cooperation zone in Zabaikalsk is representative of the type
of overseas economic and trade cooperation zones that MOFCOM wishes to
promote presently. As one of the twelve tasks that MOFCOM plans to
undertake this year, the construction of overseas economic and trade
cooperation zones seems to be accelerating its pace.
Those overseas economic and trade cooperation zones are established in
Afro-Asian countries that have good relations with China and have stable
political situations, like North Korea, Russia, Kazakhstan and Nigeria.
The specific industries are mainly in traditional spheres such as energy
resources, agriculture, light industry, smelting and electronics.
Zhao Chuang, deputy director general of the Department of Foreign
Economic Cooperation under MOFCOM, once said, "China will offer 200 to
300 million RMB of financial support to every confirmed economic and
trade cooperation zone and mid- and long-term RMB loans can reach up to 2
billion."

May 31 - Chinese steel mills have decided to continue negotiations over
the price of iron ore with major foreign miners, the China Iron and Steel
Association (ISA) said Tuesday to the denial of reports that Chinese
steelmakers will accept a 19-percent rise in contract prices.
"We will continue price talks with miners in June," a reliable source
with the ISA who declined to be named told Xinhua.
"We do not accept the price increase," he noted.
Chinese steel mills made the decision at a recent national meeting after
the world's leading iron ore provider, Brazil's Companhia Vale do Rio Doc
(CVRD), and German steel producer ThyssenKrupp AG agreed May 16 on the
19-percent increase in contract prices of iron ore.
Chinese steel mills are resolved to continue talks although some of their
foreign counterparts have agreed to the price hike, the source said.
They rejected to reply to confirm letters on the price rise by the CVRD,
citing that "the talks over price is not concluded yet," he said.
They hope to secure a lower price rise after being forced to accept a
71.5 percent hike in the iron ore price last year, he said.
So far, Chinese steel mills have not reached an agreement with the
world's three largest iron ore suppliers, including Anglo-Australian
miner BHP Billiton, Australia's Rio Tinto Group and Brazil's CVRD.
The ISA said earlier that setting the iron ore price without considering
the market of China, the world's biggest buyer of iron ore, is
unacceptable.
It said the Chinese central government has worked out a set of policies
aiming to regroup the iron and steel industry and phase out out-dated
production capacity in order to upgrade the industry's centralization,
which will surely dampen China's demand on imported iron ore.
China has always hoped to achieve win-win in iron ore price talks, based
on the principle of equality and mutual benefit and the international
market supply and demand situation, it said.
Chinese steel firms imported 275 million tons of iron ore last year, or
about 43 percent of the global marine trade volume of iron ore and 70
percent of the Asia's total imports.
China is estimated to import about 301 million tons of iron ore in 2006,
an increase of 10 percent from 2005, the ISA predicated early this month.
Currently, the European market reports the highest price for steel, the
official said.
By the end of April, the composite steel price index on the global market
rose to 149 points, close to last year's highest 153.4 points. However,
the composite steel price index on the Chinese market only reported
105.67 points at the end of April, down 23.6 percent from March's highest
138.33 points.
"Under such circumstances when the Asian market, especially the Chinese
market, is at a low price level, Chinese steel firms would not accept a
decision made without taking into account the Chinese market," the ISA
said.

Johnnie Walker's "Golf Challenge across the north and the south" was held
at the Juyong Pass on the Great Wall in Beijing on May 23. Zhang Lianwei

Chinanews, May 9 - The Chinese version of Forbes unveiled the 2006 China
Charity List, on which Century Golden Resources Group Chairman Huang
Rulun ranked first with a donation of 158 million RMB (US$19.75 million),
followed by Yu Pengnian, a philanthropist in his eighties, whose donation
reached 93.6 million RMB. However, on the 2006 China Philanthropy List
published in the Hurun Report, Yu ranked No. 1 with a donation of 2
billion RMB. These two lists are widely divergent.
It is learnt that the 2006 China Charity List is a philanthropy list
released by Forbes' Chinese edition for the third consecutive year.
Forbes indicated that compared to the lists of the previous two years,
the 100 non-state-owned enterprises on this year's list donated a total
of more than 840 million RMB in the year 2005, rising 76.6% over the
figure in 2004.
Furthermore, multinationals are increasingly active in China and their
donations are increasing year by year. Therefore, multinationals on the
2006 list rose from 10 to 25 in number, and Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking
Corp. topped the list again with 22.78 million RMB of donations.
Based on comparison, one will discover that on last year's list, nine
Chinese enterprises had a donation of less than 1 million RMB each, and
the smallest sum amongst the top 100 was 580,000 RMB. While on this
year's list, all of the 100 Chinese corporations have donated over 1
million RMB each.
The geographic distribution of those enterprises on this year's list is
wider than in the previous years. Companies in Ningxia Hui Autonomous
Region showed up on the Forbes list for the first time. Those companies'
donations focused on education and poverty relief, and the "school aid"
donation that combines the above two aspects has become a new hotspot
pursued by those groups. In addition, more companies are highly
enthusiastic about donating for sudden disasters. For instance, they have
showed great generosity to victims of natural disasters such as the
Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004.

TOKYO - Japan's prime minister sternly reprimanded the nation's defense
minister for saying the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were an
inevitable way of ending World War II, and asked him Monday to refrain
from making similar remarks.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma to "strictly
refrain from making remarks that cause misunderstanding," said chief
Cabinet spokesman Yasuhisa Shiozaki.

"It is necessary for Cabinet ministers to pay constant and careful
attention to what they say and do so that they do not cause any public
misunderstanding," Shiozaki said.

Kyuma's comments offended survivors of the bombings who believe the use
of atomic weapons was excessive, but the minister is not expected to
resign.

"I understand he will carry out his responsibility as a Cabinet minister
in consideration of the prime minister's stern warning," Shiozaki said.

On Aug. 6, 1945, the US dropped a bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" on
Hiroshima, killing at least 140,000 people in the world's first atomic
bomb attack. Three days later it dropped another atomic bomb, "Fat Man,"
on Nagasaki, where about 74,000 are estimated to have been killed.

Japan, which had attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, surrendered
on Aug. 15, 1945.

"I understand that the bombing ended the war, and I think that it
couldn't be helped," Kyuma said in a speech at a university in Chiba,
just east of Tokyo. Part of the part speech Saturday was aired by public
broadcaster NHK.

Kyuma, who is from Nagasaki, said the bombing caused great suffering in
the city but said he did not resent the US because the bombs prevented
the Soviet Union from entering the war with Japan, according to Kyodo
News agency.

The remarks were quickly criticized by atomic bomb victims.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue called the bombings the "indiscriminate
massacre of ordinary citizens" and the opposition Social Democratic Party
called for Kyuma's dismissal.

KAMPALA, -- Ugandan health ministry has banned the use of potassium
bromate in making bread.

Health Minister Stephen Mallinga was quoted by state-owned New Vision on
Saturday saying that it has been proved that potassium bromate is a
carcinogen especially of the kidneys and urinary bladder and that the
public should stop using it.

"Potassium bromate has been banned in several countries because it is
considered to be a cancer causing substance," Mallinga said.

Potassium bromate is an oxidizing agent used as a flour improver to
strengthen the dough, allowing higher rising to yield higher volume of
bread.

Potassium bromate is in form of white powder and is also used in treating
barley in beer making. It is also used to improve the quality of
fish-paste products in some countries.

In 1993 the World Health Organization (WHO) banned potassium bromate
after it found out that the flour improver causes cancer.

The ingredient was also banned from use in food products in Britain in
1990.

Following the WHO ban that was effected in 1993, other countries like
Canada, Sri Lanka, China and Nigeria have banned the use of potassium
bromate.

Mallinga said the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a joint Food and
Agriculture Organization and WHO Program responsible for compiling the
standards, codes of practice, guidelines and recommendations, has removed
potassium bromate from the list of additives permitted for use in the
food industry.

He said the ministry and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS)
take the findings very seriously.

Mallinga warned the general public especially in the baking industry to
take seriously this public health concern and stop using additives
containing potassium bromate.

"The ministry appeals to all enforcement agencies and local authorities
to vigorously implement the ban," he said.

Executive Director of UNBS Terry Kahuma said the bureau is currently
creating awareness among the owners of bakeries on dangers associated
with potassium bromate so that it's not used and protect the public from
the health hazard.

Cheering Hamas supporters wearing green headbands and waving flags surged
through Gaza's streets Friday as Islamic militants in black masks took
over one of President Mahmoud Abbas' offices and rifled through his
bedroom.

Hamas offered amnesty to its defeated foes as violence tapered off from
five days of bloodshed that claimed more than 90 lives. But Fatah leader
Abbas made the split complete by firing the Hamas prime minister, leaving
Palestinians struggling to adjust to a new political reality that has
crushed their long-standing hopes for their own state.

the control of Hamas, an Islamist movement with close ties to Syria and

Safe in the West Bank, Abbas moved quickly to cement his rule there after
losing control of Gaza to Hamas forces. He replaced Prime Minister Ismail
Haniyeh, a Hamas member, with Finance Minister Salam Fayyad, a respected
economist, to head a new moderate government.

Hamas, overwhelmingly elected in a 2006 parliament vote, denounced Abbas'
move as a coup. Hamas' supreme leader, Syrian-based Khaled Mashaal, later
said Abbas has legitimacy as an elected president and promised to
cooperate, but warned Fatah against going after Hamas loyalists in the
West Bank.

But Fatah gunmen and security forces allied with Abbas in the West Bank
were prowling that territory looking for Hamas supporters and wrecking a
Hamas radio station.

The sparring made little difference on the ground: The two Palestinian
territories, on either side of Israel, are now separate entities with two
governments �� one run by Hamas and backed by radical Islamic states, and
the other controlled by the Western-supported Fatah.

Abbas received immediate pledges of support from Israel, the U.S., Egypt,
Jordan, the U.N. and Saudi Arabia.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak
by phone that he would take steps to bolster Abbas. Officials in Olmert's
office said he would consider releasing hundreds of millions of dollars
in tax receipts frozen after Hamas came to power.

Though the moderate government that Abbas plans to appoint will have no
say in Gaza, it stands a stronger chance than the Hamas-Fatah coalition
it replaces of restoring foreign aid to the West Bank.

The yearlong aid embargo imposed after the Hamas election victory has
crippled the Palestinian economy, and many Gazans feared they would
become even more isolated and impoverished.

In a West Bank hotel, several Fatah loyalists who fled Gaza sat in the
lobby chain-smoking and worked the phones to set up new lives, hearing
from relatives in Gaza that their homes had been searched.

In Gaza City, a government worker who ran the operations room in the main
police compound, called his old office and pleaded with the new Hamas
rulers to care for the computers. He gave only his first name, Hani,
because he feared for his safety despite Hamas' amnesty offer.

Several thousand Hamas supporters in Gaza cheered as a small armored
personnel carrier seized from Abbas' forces rolled into the Palestinian
legislature compound, where a victory march was held.

A jubilant crowd chanted slogans and waved green Hamas flags as gunmen
fired in the air. Many wore green hats and headbands. Excited children
climbed over the vehicle, and bearded armed men strutted around the
parliamentary building, grinning from ear to ear.

Hamas was both cocky and conciliatory.

It released nine senior Fatah leaders and many lower-ranking activists,
saying it was granting amnesty to its rivals. Hamas spokesman Abu Obeideh
also promised to get BBC journalist Alan Johnston, held since March,
released quickly. He said Hamas has made contact with the captors and is
taking "serious and practical steps" to win his release.

Yet Hamas gunmen also entered the seaside compound used by Abbas on
visits to Gaza, rifling through the president's belongings in his
bedroom, next to his office. They lifted the mattress and searched
drawers.

One gunman sat at the desk of the Fatah leader, who is also known as Abu
Mazen, picked up the phone and pretended to call Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice. "Hello, Rice?" the gunman said. "Here we are in Abu
Mazen's office. Say hello to Abu Mazen for me."

Gaza's streets, deserted during the fighting, were crowded with cars,
pedestrians and triumphant Hamas fighters, some driving in jeeps and
firing in the air.

Haniyeh, the prime minister fired by Abbas, promised to restore security
to the anarchic territory. He urged Gazans to display "self-restraint"
and end the widespread looting of houses and other property of Fatah
officials.

Looters stripped the home of Fatah strongman Mohammed Dahlan of
everything from windows and doors to flowerpots. "This was the house of
the murderer Dahlan that was cleansed by the holy warriors," read
graffiti sprayed on the wall.

Donkey carts outside the house waited to take more loot. Dahlan was in
Egypt when the fighting erupted, and reached the West Bank on Thursday.

Gaza City's Shifa Hospital was still grappling with battle casualties.
More than 90 people were killed in the fighting and dozens wounded. The
morgue was overflowing, with four bodies lined up on the floor, and some
of the wounded were sleeping on cardboard on the floor.

Two men were killed in revenge slayings Friday, including a Fatah gunman
thrown from a roof in what Hamas described as a family grievance �� the
gunman, they said, had killed a member of a Hamas-allied family. Another
Fatah loyalist was shot dead in southern Gaza.

Since Hamas' victory late Thursday, about a dozen Fatah gunmen had been
killed in gangland-style executions, Fatah said.

Before word came of Hamas' amnesty offer, 97 Fatah officials fled in a
fishing boat to Egypt. Others reached Israel via the Erez crossing and
headed to the West Bank.

An Egyptian security delegation left Gaza after failing in its mediation
efforts between the warring Palestinian factions.

Both the United Nations and the European Union reiterated support Friday
for Abbas. Arab League foreign ministers also threw their support behind
Abbas, but urged an immediate halt to infighting so that the unity of
Palestinian lands can be preserved.

Hamas' military takeover of Gaza formalized the separation between Gaza
and the West Bank, and was a major setback to dreams of Palestinian
statehood.

With a larger middle class, more foreign passport holders and more
contact with the outside world, many West Bank residents have long felt
they have little in common with Gaza.

"I expect to have economic development here and poverty there in Gaza,"
Salah Haniyeh, a government employee, said as he watched masked Fatah
gunmen parading in pickup trucks through the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Across the West Bank, Fatah gunmen backed by Abbas-allied security forces
expanded an anti-Hamas sweep. Dozens of Hamas supporters had been seized
by gunmen or arrested by police since Thursday.

In the city of Nablus, a Hamas stronghold, Fatah gunmen set up
checkpoints and barred access to the Hamas-run municipal building. Gunmen
also vandalized a Hamas media office in Nablus, trashing computers and
furniture.

"We will go after them (Hamas) everywhere," said Mouin Hijazi, a Nablus
leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent Fatah offshoot. "We
won't allow them to continue existing in the West Bank."

In Gaza, an immediate concern was how long the coastal strip would be
sealed. Gaza's main passenger and cargo crossings, with Egypt and Israel,
were closed this week, and it was not clear when they would reopen.
Extended closure could quickly lead to a humanitarian crisis.

A Hamas spokesman said Palestinian police, now under Hamas command, would
take up positions at the crossings, but it was unlikely Israel would
agree to such a deployment because Hamas militants frequently attacked
the passages in the past.

John Ging, head of U.N. aid operations in Gaza, said his agency would
resume work Saturday. The U.N. Relief and Works Agency provides emergency
food rations and health care to hundreds of thousands of Gazans. He
called for a quick reopening of the Gaza crossings
