According to statistics that China News had obtained earlier, the country's private enterprises showed a trend of rapid expansion and were becoming more closely connected to the mainstream society. This authoritative survey was the sixth of its kind. It showed that by the end of the first half of 2004, there were 3.34 million registered private enterprises in China, an increase of 1.31 million over 2001. Areas with the most rapid development and largest number of private enterprises were mainly located in the eastern coastal region. In particular, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Shandong and Beijing took the top six spots, with over half of China's private companies. Currently in full expansion, private companies are growing pluralistic in main industrial sectors while emerging in many other sectors as well due to easier market access. In addition to the rapidly increasing proportion of those in new sectors such as social services as well as scientific research and technology, 4% of private firms are in education, culture, health and sports, and 1.6% are in public utilities such as electricity and gas. Moreover, headquarters and production bases are gradually moving from rural and suburban areas to large cities.
